Madam Bovary

In his first two novels, Flaubert emphasized in realistic detail the essential banality and boredom of life in the provinces and in the capital. Madame Bovary, which tells the story of a woman imprisoned by her middle-class surroundings, is also a harsh attack by Flaubert to the moral conservatism, rough manners, and unsophisticated taste of the emergent middle class.
